More than 200 members of the community celebrated the opening of “Lest We Forget,” a large public art installation created by German Italian filmmaker and photographer Luigi Toscano. The exhibit at The District in Chesterfield features large portraits of Holocaust survivors. The portraits were taken by Toscano, who is a UNESCO Artist for Peace.
During the event, Toscano, who is self-taught in visual arts, told the gathering that before he started his quest to remember Holocaust survivors, he had been—among other professions—a roofer, a bouncer and a window cleaner.
“I’m not political and I’m not a historian,” Toscano said. “I’m a normal guy. If we forget the past, we are bound to repeat it.”
