Whether you’re discovering Judaism for the first time or need a good refresher, an introduction to Judaism course is a welcoming way to explore Jewish history, holidays, life cycle moments and a way of living.
“Our tradition teaches that we learn from our teachers, much from our colleagues and the most from our students,” said Rabbi Elizabeth B. Hersh of Temple Emanuel. “Jewish learning is a lifelong process. The benefit is learning as an adult in a caring environment.”
Hersh and other St. Louis area Reform rabbis are hosting a new “Intro to Judaism” course in 2024. The classes are open to all and designed for anyone needing a refresher to beginners from any religious background.
This program is also devised as a gateway for interfaith couples, in-laws of Jews, unaffiliated Jews, individuals exploring conversion and anyone seeking more knowledge about Judaism.
The classes will be held on Tuesdays from early January to April at Temple Emanuel in Creve Coeur.

Why is taking an Intro to Judaism class a good idea?
Yisrael means one who struggles with God. Judaism encouraged us to ask questions. And each answer brings more questions. This class encourages us to engage and question – with the text, the teacher and one another.
What would you say are three things participants will leave the class knowing or understanding better?
Students will have a better idea of what it means to be Jewish and peoplehood. They will be more comfortable engaging in a Jewish year and with lifecycles as well as a sense of belonging. They will have the opportunity to hear from various teachers who have different voices.
What can people expect during the classes?
The class will be filled with discussion and room for questions and sharing personal experiences. We learn from one another.
Why is taking a class like this beneficial?
This class is for those on a Jewish journey, for those with a Jewish partner or exploring one’s heritage. It is also a great class for those who wish to explore their Judaism as an adult.
What’s the key to making this class enjoyable and sticky for students?
Come to the class with an open heart and mind. Come with questions and a curiosity to learn and grow. Come knowing this is a beginning.
