More than 6,000 miles separate St. Louis from Israel, but that distance seemed invisible to the 200 community members who gathered to commemorate Yom Hazikaron (Israel’s Memorial Day) on April 20. The event at the Jewish Community Center paid tribute to fallen soldiers and victims of terror.
The solemn day of remembrance was an opportunity to remember their sacrifice, said Danny Cohn, president and CEO of the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, in opening remarks.
“We are eternally grateful and forever in their debt,” Cohn said. “Yom Hazikaron reminds us the story of Israel is not only our resilience and innovation, but also one of profound sacrifice. We mourn not only the brave and selfless soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces, but also the countless victims of terror. Behind every name is a life filled with purpose, a family forever changed, a story that does not end, but lives through us all.”
