Nearly 100 preschoolers got an introduction to social action on Jan. 19 at Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School. The annual “Small Hands…Big Difference” event is held annually on Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
“The purpose is to bring together the community for a day of learning, of tzedakah to do some good for the world,” said Andrea Newstead, director of operations. “We want to tell the kids that at a very young age they can make a difference.”
The 2026 version of Small Hands…Big Difference came on a frigid morning, but the Mirowitz school gymnasium and classrooms were buzzing with activity. That was encouraging to see, according to Brian Thomas, interim head of school.
“I’m blown away by the numbers of people here on MLK Day,” Thomas said. “They showed up with their parents, and then all of these volunteers are here. I’m so excited to be a part of this.”
