Abby Jacks, 3, had an opportunity to make a friendship bracelet and learn about an important date in American history on Friday, June 19. She was one of several dozen children who participated in an event centered around Juneteenth, a federal holiday that commemorates the effective end of slavery in the United States. Saul Mirowitz Jewish Community School welcomed children and parents to Millenium Park in Creve Coeur to work on art projects and enjoy a story read by Lucy P., the school’s new kindergarten teacher.
The idea was to have fun while learning, according to Andrea Newstead, director of enrollment and marketing/communications.
“We want to teach our students and community about the holiday of Juneteenth and so we’re making friendship bracelet, and an arts and crafts project,” Newstead said. “We’ve got the Juneteenth flag, too. We know that all the camps are closed on today so thought it would be a good opportunity to bring the community together to have a little fun and do a little learning.”
