Nearly 300 St. Louis area scouts placed flags on 8,000 veterans’ graves at 10 Jewish cemeteries on Sunday, May 24. The annual project is a joint effort coordinated by the Jewish War Veterans and scout troops. Scouts have been placing the flags for more than 50 years.
Steve Sobelman, who oversaw the project at Chesed Shel Emeth Cemetery in University City, said the “St. Louis Memorial Day Good Turn” gives scouts the satisfaction of doing a good deed.
“It’s a good learning opportunity for them,” Sobelman said. “They conduct a service at each grave site. It gives them a moment to thing about what they’re doing.”
