Last year, during an informal poll of Jewish Light readers, less than 1% of respondents said they had a TikTok account or had ever viewed content on the platform. Well, now if there was ever a reason to join TikTok, this may be it: Fran Drescher is teaching Yiddish.
“The Nanny” star known for her unmistakable Queens accent and unapologetic Jewish humor has become an unlikely viral sensation. On “The Nanny”’s official TikTok account, Drescher stars in a series of clips defining classic Yiddish words from bubbe and mensch to tchotchkes.
Each word comes with that signature Drescher flair: equal parts camp, confidence and a bit cultural pride.
As Kveller’s Lior Zaltzman wrote, “All I want is for Fran to narrate an entire Yiddish-to-English dictionary.” And honestly, as much as I love my bubbe’s spin on Yiddish, I’d love to read to see such a dictionary.
Keeping Yiddish alive one TikTok at a time

Drescher, who grew up Jewish in Queens, has always celebrated her heritage through her work. “The Nanny” made space for Yiddish phrases, Jewish humor and that distinctive nasally voice long before diversity in television was a talking point. Now she’s bringing it all back through social media, bridging generations who might otherwise never have heard a word like meshuggana outside a deli counter.
For younger fans the videos are hilarious. For older viewers they’re a reminder of family dinners, grandparents and the way a single Yiddish word make an entire English sentence.
Yiddish is alive and well, and seeing Drescher give new life to old words feels just right. Whether you say bubbe or grandma you know exactly what she means.
