PA Prime Minister Salam Fayyad tenders resignation

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Salam Fayyad reportedly has given his resignation to PA President Mahmoud Abbas.

The resignation was tendered Wednesday, while Abbas was in Jordan, Reuters reported Thursday, citing two unnamed sources. Reuters said it was unclear whether Abbas would accept Fayyad’s resignation, despite their differences.

A spokeswoman in Fayyad’s office declined to comment to Reuters on the resignation reports.

The resignation comes following major disagreements over government policy in the PA and rumors that Abbas would fire Fayyad, who also serves as finance minister.

Fayyad, who was educated in the United States, has the backing of President Obama and other Western leaders, who believe he is essential to building an independent Palestinian state.
