The local Jewish community space, Matovu, will host an exclusive tour of one of the largest Judaica collections in the region on Nov. 12, from 7 to 8 p.m. The event will take place at Dunaway Books, 3111 S. Grand Blvd., which houses more than 10,000 Jewish books, offering attendees a rare glimpse into the depth and diversity of Jewish literature.
Since its founding in 2018, Matovu has become a vibrant hub for Jewish gatherings, hosting events that highlight the rich traditions and scholarship of the Jewish community. This tour is part of Matovu’s mission to connect people with Jewish history and culture through meaningful engagement.
The Judaica collection at Dunaway Books is exceptional for its scope and significance, featuring everything from rare prayer books to scholarly works. The collection expanded significantly after Claudia Brodie, co-owner of Dunaway Books, and her partner, Kevin Twellman, acquired 10,000 titles from a retiring Manhattan bookseller in 2017.
“These books represent more than just printed words—they’re a window into Jewish history, culture, and tradition,” Brodie said in 2023.
During the tour, attendees will explore the historical significance and personal stories behind the collection. A Washington University student, who spent months cataloging the titles, described the experience as “reading the soul of a community through the books they held dear.”
The event is free, with a suggested donation of $5 to $15. Registration is required and can be completed at matovustl.org/events/2024/11/12/jewish-book-collection-tour.
