The Staenberg Speaker Series is more than a lecture—it’s an opportunity for young Jewish professionals to learn from accomplished leaders, gain career insights and build connections within the community. Hosted by IgniteYP, the series brings together professionals ages 22 to 35, offering mentorship and inspiration from high-profile Jewish figures.
The most recent lecture on Feb. 16, featured Judge Rachel Freier, the first Hasidic woman elected to public office in the United States. Freier shared her journey from legal secretary to New York Supreme Court justice while balancing her family life, legal career and commitment to Jewish values.
‘I have a little mom who does big things’
Freier spoke about staying true to her values despite outside pressure. She told a story about her youngest son, who was teased at school because his mother was becoming a lawyer—something uncommon in their community. His response: “I have a little mom who does big things.”
“She made a big point about wearing her beliefs on her sleeve and not being swayed by anyone,” said Antoine Trifonov, who attended the event. “She emphasized that authenticity is key, not just in personal life but also in business, bringing the same integrity and principles to both spaces.”
For Devon Furash, the most meaningful takeaway was Freier’s ability to challenge expectations. “Hearing her speak about standing firm in her beliefs while pursuing her career made me think differently about my own ambitions,” Furash said.
Marne White, another attendee, reflected on how Freier’s message applied to her own life. “Her story reminded me that success isn’t about fitting into someone else’s expectations—it’s about creating your own path while staying true to who you are,” White said.
Shayla Shmuel noted how Freier’s story resonated with the crowd. “She made a big impact by showing that success and identity don’t have to be at odds,” Shmuel said. “She didn’t change who she was to fit in—she brought who she was into everything she did.”
Q&A and audience reflections
The evening began with a networking session, followed by Freier’s talk and an audience Q&A. Attendees asked about her experiences balancing tradition with professional ambition.
“She really drove home the idea that we can succeed in any space without compromising who we are,” said Furash.
