J’la Gala triumphs with record-breaking support for JCC scholarships

A Night of Laughter, Honoring, and Giving Back at the Annual Event
Sen. Al Franken

The annual gala, J’la, emerged as a dazzling celebration of community and philanthropy. The festive event not only was thoroughly enjoyed by attendees but also set a new record amount raised for scholarships supporting the Jewish Community Center’s diverse range of programs.

“While gifts are still coming in, to date, this amazing evening resulted in more than $580,000 raised to support scholarships for those who desire to participate in J programming. What an amazing outpouring of generosity from our community,” said the J’s Chief Philanthropy Officer Julie Gibbs.

The sold-out event at The Factory in Chesterfield attracted more than 500 people. It serves as the J’s primary fundraiser and was made possible by the support of presenting sponsors, Michael Staenberg of the Staenberg Group, and the Kuhn Foundation.

Star-Studded Entertainment

Co-chaired by Jill and Mark Schupp, the highlight of the night was a stellar performance by five-time Emmy winner, two-time Grammy winner, former U.S. Senator and Saturday Night Live writer, Al Franken, He delivered a 25-minute stand-up routine to close out the festivities.

A Heartfelt Tribute

This year’s honoree, the J’s President and CEO, Lynn Wittels, received a heartfelt tribute for her 18 years of dedicated service. A touching video showcased the profound impact she had on the Jewish community and beyond. The J’s Board of Directors presented Wittels with a Shabbat statue, commemorating her legacy, and St. Louis County Executive Sam Page declared Feb. 29 as Lynn Wittels Day in the county.

Community Leaders in Attendance

The event drew the presence of notable figures, including St. Louis County Prosecutor Wesley Bell, State Representatives LaDonna Applebaum and Doug Clemmons, and Senator Tracy McCreery, all joining to celebrate Wittels and the J’s achievements.

Gratitude and Looking Forward

Expressing immense gratitude to attendees and contributors, the J encourages those who wish to contribute to do so through the J’la Fund-A-Need.

The overwhelming support sets the stage for 2024. Mark your calendars for J’la 2024, scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 23, at The Factory.
