In a testament to the life-saving impact of a single act of generosity, the Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU) ambulance donated by former St. Louisan Dr. Irvin Pretsky continues to make a profound difference in Israel. We first told you about the MICU originally dedicated in memory of his parents, Jake and Dora Pretsky of University City, in February, 2022. Since then, the ambulance has responded to 11,237 emergency calls – an increase of more than 6,100 calls since the last report 11 months ago.
“Not only has it helped deliver many babies, but also serviced 11,237 emergency calls to date! That is huge– an increase of more than 6,100 calls since our last report 11 months ago,” wrote Dorin Esfahani, director of major gifts for Magen David Adom’s western region, in a recent email to Pretsky.
The MICU, stationed in Efrat at Pretsky’s request, has also become a critical lifeline for expectant mothers. According to Esfahani, the ambulance has responded to 1,300 women in labor – a remarkable testament to its role in bringing new life into the world.
The ambulance, which was dedicated in Los Angeles in November 2022 before being sent to Israel, carries the names of Pretsky’s 21 great-grandchildren, a nod to the legacy he hoped to create for his family.
“The unit was sent off to Israel to be stationed, by my request in Efrat where my granddaughter and her family live,” Pretsky said in a previous interview. “My five great-grandkids there share bragging rights, as their names are emblazoned on the doors of the ambulance, along with names of my 21 great-grandkids, as well.”
It’s one of 1,400 Magen David Adom ambulances in service, supporting a network of first responders who often operate under extreme conditions.
“EMTs and paramedics are treating the wounded, often while under rocket attack and gunfire themselves. As always, the men and women of MDA are risking their lives to save the lives of others,” said an MDA spokesperson in an earlier email to the Jewish Light. “Help is desperately needed to put more ambulances on the road and to replenish supplies for EMTs and paramedics and for MDA’s blood services division. We thank everyone in St. Louis for your help.”
