Seymour Victor Pollack, 90, of St. Louis Mo, passed away on December 22, 2023. He was born on August 3, 1933 in Brooklyn, New York.
Seymour began his career in the Aerospace industry designing fighter jet engines and then took a huge career risk to enter the then unknown world of Computer Science. In 1966 he was asked to help establish the department of Computer Science at Washington University in St. Louis and served as a Full Professor, publishing more than 10 textbooks and several articles on the subject.
His first love, however, was teaching, and he truly enjoyed making the complex subjects he taught comprehensible and entertaining. His generous nature and engaging sense of humor made him a favorite of many students and colleagues at Washington University in Saint Louis. He was recognized with several honors including the Distinguished Faculty Award, Favorite Faculty Award, the Burlington Northern Foundation Faculty Achievement Award and many others.
He was a keen practitioner of his art and consulted for several companies designing computer systems to streamline processes and improve results in the St. Louis area, including the American Automobile Association, McDonnell Douglas and others.
Outside of his career, Seymour had a passion for music and was a talented pianist and enjoyed playing trombone and composing original pieces as he and his wife Sydell found joy playing in many St. Louis area orchestras and Bands.
Seymour will be lovingly remembered for his kind and generous nature, his sense of humor and empathy.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sydell, his son Mark, daughter Sherie, daughter-in-law Barbara Pollack and granddaughters Catherine and Michelle Pollack. Berger Memorial Service
