Richard Sydney Marx, a former attorney, beloved husband of Claire Lee, father of Anne, Rick, Tom and Steve, grandfather of Rebecca, Julia, Nate and Jo, father-in-law, great grandfather, and long-time resident of Clayton, Missouri, died peacefully at home on Monday, May 12, 2025. He was 98.
Dick grew up in Clayton with his loving parents, Sydney and Florence, and his close brother, Tom, who all pre-deceased him. He attended Clayton High School, was a camp counselor at Camp Nebagamon, which Steven later attended as a camper, earned his Bachelor’s from Washington University and his law degree from the University of Michigan.
Dick imparted his love for the outdoors, especially canoeing, to all his children. He was an early adopter, recycling newspaper, bottles and cans in the early 70s, cutting back on meat, exercising and being a co-equal partner with Claire, doing the dishes and food shopping when she went back to school. In his 50s, he took up running, joining an early-morning running group and competing in a number of marathons.
Richard built up a very successful law practice in Clayton, helping many small businesses with their legal needs. He was also active in Temple Emmanuel, an avid art collector, and a life-long Cardinals fan. His greatest joy later in life was found with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
The family is grateful for the support provided by his caregivers and hospice. A special thanks to RJ for his continuous kindness and support shown to Richard.
