Morton “Morty” Bertish, 11/14/1950 – 07/11/2025
With profound sadness, we announce the passing of Morton Bertish, a devoted husband, beloved father, grandfather, brother and passionate community advocate, who passed away on July 11,2025 at the age of 74.
Morty was the cherished son of the late Irving and Mildred Bertish, and grew up with a deep love of family, community, sports and a sharp sense of humor. These traits defined him throughout his life. He is survived by his loving wife, Irene (Steinman), his son Mark (Angelica) and daughter Debbie. He was a proud and adoring grandfather to Collin, Leo, Alexandria, and Tonya. He is also survived by his brothers Gerry (Jodie) and Ted (Ellen), and sister-in-law Barbara (Marvin) Ichkowsky, along with many nieces, nephews, and friends who will miss his warmth and wit.
A graduate of University City High School and the University of Missouri (Mizzou), where he majored in political science, Morty spent his professional life in the insurance industry, building a successful career grounded in integrity and care for his clients. Outside of work, he was a tireless advocate for his community. He used his voice, often the loudest in the room, to speak up for those who couldn’t. Whether championing programs for underserved families or pushing for greater access to community resources, he led with compassion and determination.
A lifelong athlete, he played baseball and basketball from childhood through adulthood, later coaching his son’s teams and, in recent years, volunteering with youth sports in the community. His passion for the game never faded, especially when it came to the St. Louis Cardinals, whose wins (and losses) he loudly analyzed on social media.
Morty also believed it was “better to laugh than cry about it,” and he lived by those words. Whether lightening a heavy moment or bringing joy to an ordinary day, he had a gift for humor and connection. He never met a stranger, only someone he hadn’t talked to yet. His warmth made everyone feel welcome.
Family was his heart, and community was his calling. He brought people together, stood up for what mattered, and showed us all the power of humor, love, speaking up and a little bit of stubbornness.
A memorial service will be held on July 15th at 10:00am at Berger Memorial Chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, in honor of his lifelong dedication to helping others. Please visit bergermemorialchapel.com for more information.
