Harold “Hal” Roth, died March 5, 2013. Beloved husband of Shirley Bernice Roth (and the late Mary Roth); father of Michael Roth and Nancy Darley; step-father of Dr. Mark Comensky, Larry (Faith) Comensky and Janis Comensky; dear grandfather of Adam Darley, Marissa Fugua, Cindy (Bob) Sweeney, Jana (Bryan) Hamann, Matthew (Angel) Roth and Tiras Comensky; great-grandfather of 7; dear son of the late Benjamin and the late Ida Roth; brother of the late Rose (late Phil) Sherman; uncle, cousin and friend to many. Hal was born and raised in St. Louis and owned, along with his late wife Mary, a Hal-Mar store where they sold greeting cards, keepsakes, collectables and artificial foliage. Hal was an accomplished artist and poet. Hal was a true American hero who served his country in WWII. Hal was among the elite group who landed on Omaha Beach in Normandy France on “D” Day, June 6, 1944. He was captured by the Nazis. Thinking quickly, he threw away his dog tags so as not to reveal his Jewish identity and was taken Prisoner of War and kept in isolation for nearly 10 months. He secretly kept a journal of his experience hidden in the lining of his jacket which is displayed at the National POW/MIA Museum in Andersonville, GA. Hal received the Purple Heart, POW Medal, Combat Infantryman Badge, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with 3 Bronze Battle Stars, Bronze Star Medal, Two Overseas Bars, Good Conduct Medal, Victory Medal and in 2012, the French Government’s highest award, the French Legion of Honor Medal and was named Knight of the Legion of Honor. Hal continued to champion POW/MIA rights after he retired at age 50 in Florida and upon moving back to St. Louis.
