David R. Smith, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and respected businessman, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2025, in St. Louis, Missouri, at the age of 92. Born on August 6, 1932, in St. Louis to Goldie (Isaacs) and Elwin R. Smith, David lived a life marked by kindness, generosity, and an enduring commitment to his family and community.
David received his education in the Clayton School District before attending the University of Missouri in Columbia and Washington University in St. Louis, but it was his street smarts that led to a remarkable career spanning over five decades as a property and casualty insurance specialist. Known for his professionalism and integrity, David not only built a thriving business but also took great pride in mentoring young professionals entering the field. Many of his clients became lifelong friends, a testament to his warm personality and genuine care for others.
David is survived by his devoted wife of 35 years, Barbara Behan Smith; his children Howard Smith (Donna Aronoff) of St. Louis, Missouri, and Marcy Cohen (Dr. Stephen) of Scottsdale, Arizona; as well as his cherished grandchildren Josh Smith, Isaac Smith, Jonathan Edwards, and Sydney Edwards. David was preceded in death by his first wife and adoring mother of his two children, Judy Loeb Smith; his parents, and his siblings, Barbara Brack (Reginald) and Charles Smith (Phyllis, living).
A man deeply rooted in faith and tradition, David was actively involved in numerous Jewish charities and led missions to Israel. His dedication to these causes reflected his strong values and desire to make a positive impact on the world around him.
David’s greatest joy was his loving family. He had an adventurous spirit that led him to travel the world extensively. He also enjoyed golf, card games with friends, cheering on the St. Louis Cardinals baseball team, and savoring Italian cuisine. Known for his wonderful sense of humor and ability to make friends wherever he went, David brought light into the lives of all who knew him.
David R. Smith will be remembered as a kind-hearted man whose legacy lives on through the love he shared with family and friends alike. May his memory bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to know him.
