Carol Portman, April 15, 2025
Carol Portman (91) died peacefully in her sleep the morning of Tuesday, April 15.
She was the beloved wife of the late Darwin Portman; mother of Alan (late Molly) Portman and Robert (Charla) Portman; grandmother of Brett Shartzer (Carrie), Yael and Merav Portman; aunt of Amanda (Glen) Howard, Zoe Edwards, and a good friend.
She will be remembered for her kindness, wisdom, caring nature, and outspoken voice, her love of volunteering and traveling, and the way she made everyone feel at home in her presence. Her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and nieces, who brought her endless pride and happiness.
She stayed active with many volunteer projects. Two of her favorites were registering voters with the League of Women Voters, especially at Naturalization ceremonies. She registered voters for 14 years. Her last volunteer job was with Ten by Three. Ten by Three imports woven baskets from seven countries providing income for the artisans, providing an income and teaching entrepreneurship. She volunteered weekly at Ten by Three, amassing a record of over 700 hours of volunteer time. The staff loved having her in the building. Tuesdays quickly became “Miss Carol” Days.
The family will be hosting a memorial on Sunday, June 1 from 1:00-3:00 pm at Five Oaks on Warson, 200 N. Warson Rd. Olivette, MO 63132 (The Olivette Community Center.)
