Arthur S. Margulis, Sr., February 3, 1934 – May 23, 2025

Beloved husband of the late Joyce L. Margulis for 61 years; father and father-in-law of Arthur Jr. (Elaine), William (Marion), James, and Tom (Ashley) Margulis; grandfather of Sarah and Aaron Margulis, Abigail Tremml (Brian), William, Matthew, Eleanor, James, Charlie, Tommy and Kate Margulis; great-grandfather of Noah Tremml; son of the late Fantine and Alvin Margulis; brother of the late Jackie and the late Joel Margulis; brother-in-law of Judy DeWoskin (late Roger) and Donny Babchick (Debbie); uncle, cousin, and friend.
A graduate of University City High School and Washington University’s undergraduate and law schools, Art served as a Lieutenant in the United States Army in an artillery unit upon graduation. He then worked as an FBI Special Agent, receiving three special commendations from FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover. He was a past president and member of the Former FBI Agents Society. After marrying his high school sweetheart, Joyce, they eventually returned to St. Louis where Art began his distinguished career as one of the area’s preeminent criminal defense attorneys. He practiced law for over 50 years, taking on many high-profile federal and state criminal cases and earning numerous accolades along the way. Giving back to the community where he lived most of his life was also very important to him. He was a longtime board member and former president of The Backstoppers of St. Louis, an organization he was particularly passionate about.
Above everything else, Art most enjoyed time spent with family and friends, whether at the family farm and coaching little league baseball in his younger days, or on the golf course and fishing throughout his life. He was a voracious reader and history buff, full of knowledge and always eager to debate politics and sports (especially the Cardinals). His endearing sense of humor made him a joy to be around in any setting and always put people at ease.
