JERUSALEM (JTA) — At least 17 people were killed when a mortar shell struck a crowded Gaza market.

The shell struck a market in the Shejaiya neighborhood of Gaza City on Wednesday afternoon during a unilateral humanitarian pause in fighting called by Israel.

The Israel Defense Forces had said in calling the pause that it would continue to operate in certain areas, including the Shejaiya neighborhood, according to reports.
