Reports: Ariel Sharon suffering from kidney failure

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The condition of former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has deteriorated and he is suffering from kidney failure.

Sharon, 85, has been in a coma-like state since he had a major stroke in January 2006, less than a month after suffering from an initial stroke. He reportedly is in a state classified as “minimal consciousness.”

Sharon is currently hospitalized at Chaim Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv and his family is with him, according to reports in the Israeli media.

Tests conducted one year ago at the Soroka University Medical Center in Beersheba showed that Sharon has significant brain activity, despite being presumed to be in a vegetative state.
