Peres wishes Shanah Tova to Diaspora

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Israeli President Shimon Peres has offered Rosh Hashanah wishes to Israelis and Jews in the Diaspora.

Peres released a published Rosh Hashanah greeting and also posted a one-minute YouTube video greeting on his Facebook page

“As we stand poised on the threshold of the New Year, it is my distinct pleasure to convey my heartfelt good wishes to all the Jewish communities around the world, in my name and on behalf of your brethren in Israel, eager to embark upon another year with hope and optimism,” he said in his published message.

“We look upon the Jewish communities around the world not only as our extended family, but also as our full partners, and feel it is imperative that our deep-rooted Jewish bonds continue to be safeguarded, cultivated and brought to fruition.”

In a message to Israelis released Saturday night, Peres said: “Israel is a pluralistic society of many shades, a society of Jews, Christians, Muslim Arabs, Bedouin, Druze and Circassians who live together in coexistence. All incidents of discrimination must be dealt with by the legal authorities. Greater emphasis must be placed on education toward tolerance and equality.”

In his Facebook message Peres added that “Peace is the greatest blessing for our children.”
