TORONTO (JTA) — The Canadian Parliament’s Sergeant-at-Arms, who shot down a gunman inside the Parliament building last month, will be honored by Israel’s Knesset.

Kevin Vickers, who is in Israel for a security conference, will be recognized Wednesday by Speaker of the Knesset Yuli Edelstein.

Vickers, a 58-year-old former Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer, shot and killed Michael Zehaf-Bibeau, who had been firing his weapon in the Hall of Honor of Parliament in Ottawa on the morning of Oct. 22, just after he shot and killed a soldier guarding the National War Memorial.

Security officers shot Zehaf-Bibeau but he continued down the hall until Vickers finally stopped him.

Vickers was hailed as a hero and received a standing ovation from Canadian lawmakers the following day.

He is scheduled to be in the Knesset’s audience gallery Wednesday when he receives his  recognition.

Vickers and other Canadian security and police officials are in Israel for the third international Homeland Security conference to examine intelligence, counterterrorism and law enforcement.
