72 years of Detroit Jewish News go online

(JTA) — An archive of 72 years of editions of the Detroit Jewish News has gone online.

The archive contains more than 260,000 pages of the Detroit Jewish News, dating back to the weekly newspaper’s founding in 1942.

The archive, funded by donors, was spearheaded by the Detroit Jewish News Foundation.

It is among the largest archives of its kind in America, both Jewish and secular, according to the foundation. It will be updated with future issues of the newspaper.

The idea for the archive took root about a decade ago, after a fire destroyed 60 years worth of back copies of the newspaper. The issues were backed up on microfilm at another location.
