Congregation Shaare Emeth partnered with The International Institute of St. Louis, MOSAIC and The Magic House to provide a fun Saturday afternoon earlier this year for 18 new American families. A group of 35 Shaare Emeth volunteers, including 20 Shaare Emeth Temple Youth Group members and a few b’nei mitzvah families, helped 100 new Americans from places such as the Congo, Somalia, Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and Myanmar enjoy two hours at the Magic House, which provided free admission for those involved. The idea for the program was brought to Shaare Emeth by Betsy Cohen, executive director of St. Louis Mosaic Project, who connected with congregant Stan Shanker and Shaare Emeth’s Tzedek Committee. MOSHE and WOSE paid for bus transportation for the families, who left the day with snacks and goody bags (including a “Welcome HOME” sign for each family made by Shaare Emeth member Tsila Schwartz).
