Congregation Temple Israel has planned two musical events this month, including live performances Feb. 17 and Feb. 20. Both events are free and open to the Jewish community. Temple Israel is located at #1 Rabbi Alvan D. Rubin Drive in Creve Coeur.
During Temple Israel’s Feb. 17 Shabbat service, Rabbi-Cantor Robbi Sherwin of the Jewish band Sababa will give an interactive performance. A pre-oneg starts at 6 p.m. with the service at 6:30. Sherwin, of Austin, Texas, serves as the spiritual leader of Congregation B’nai Butte in Crested Butte, Colo., where she has popularized the “Mountain Minyon” (Shabbat services on skis at 9,800 feet) and alpine Torah hikes. She has two CDs of original Jewish music, “Todah LaChem” (Thanks, Y’all!, 2000) and “Aish HaKodesh” (the Holy Fire, 2004).
On Presidents Day (Monday, Feb. 20) musician and Jewish music educator Shira Klein will perform a concert at Temple Israel for Jewish families with young children (age 6 or under). The concert begins at 10 a.m. Klein, also known as ShirLaLa, is an award-winning Jewish musician and recording artist who performs across the country and internationally. Klein serves on the faculty of the Hava NaShira Music Institute and is also a founding company member of Storahtelling: Ritual Theatre Revived. For more information on ShirLaLa, visit shirlala.com.
