Students to lead ‘Tech Tutor’ class for older adults at Covenant Place

“I have an iPad, now what do I do with it?” “Can I take pictures with my phone?” These are common questions asked by older adults who wish to use technology devices to explore the Internet, engage in social media or keep in touch with family and friends.

Now in its second year, the Covenant Place Tech Tutor program, with funding from the Federation’s Kranzberg Family Foundation, pairs middle to high school aged students with older adults for an eight-week program in which students are the tutors and mentors.  The class is held weekly on Wednesday afternoons at 1 p.m., beginning June 8 and running through July 31, in the Covenant Place II library/computer lab in the lower level of 8 Millstone Campus Drive. T

he first class is exclusively for the student teachers to experience some of the challenges of older adults whose eyesight and dexterity may be affected by the aging process and to understand the needs of senior learners. Shaare Emeth’s “Camp Emeth” middle school campers will be joined by area high school students to provide the class instruction.

The program is free and open to the community. Community participants are asked to bring their own technology devices. Class size is limited. For more information, call 314-432-1610.
