Spiritual support group for Jews with mental illness plans meeting
Published August 31, 2011
Achraiyut, a support group for Jewish persons with a mental illness, will meet Monday, Sept. 12 at Congregation Neve Shalom, 1240 Dautel Lane in Creve Coeur. In Hebrew, achraiyut means “to assume responsibility.”
The group is designed for those who have taken the first step toward recovery by accepting their mental illness and receiving treatment to achieve the greatest possible state of wellness. The group meets monthly, usually on the first Monday of each month, from 7:15 to 9 p.m. There is no charge for attending the meetings.
The group will be facilitated by a person who is living with a mental illness. Each member brings their personal experience of what has helped him or her deal with their illness. It is not a therapy group, but rather a support group that is based on encouragement and positive feedback.

Achraiyut is an off-shoot of JAMI-STL, a Jewish initiative that has been created to provide support and services for Jewish persons with mental illness and their families.
