June 2 is the date for this year’s Senior University at Congregation Shaare Emeth.
This year’s theme is “Israel at 60”. The day will begin and end with an overview of Israel on its 60th birthday. In between, adult students at this one day symposium will have the opportunity to take two classes of their choosing.
After a 9 a.m. registration and light breakfast, the class day will begin at 9:30 a.m. with a keynote address by Bob Cohn, editor-in-chief emeritus, St. Louis Jewish Light. He will speak on “Looking Back and Looking Forward: Israel’s Historic Roots and Future Prospects.”
For Class Session One, participants will choose one of four offerings: “A History of the Arab-Palestinian-Israeli Conflict,” “Cooking Israeli Dishes,” “Memories and Reflections from Bergen-Belson”, and “Israel in the Midrash.”
Class Session Two offerings are “Israel’s Three Thousand Four Hundred and Eighth Birthday?”, “Israeli Music of the Pioneers”, “Amichai, Poet of our People”, and “The Art of Healing.”
After a lunch catered by Orlando’s, everyone will come together again for Class Session Three, a special session for all University attendees with Rabbi Jeffrey Stiffman: “Israel at 60! The Changes I have Seen –Memories of Our Congregational Trips to Israel — Concern for the Future.”
Cost for the entire day, including breakfast and lunch is only $10. Participants must fill out a registration form which can be obtained from Susan Murray in the temple office at 314-569-0010.
Everyone is welcome at this event.
