Congregation Shaare Emeth will hold an Art and Geneology Weekend Feb. 28 to March 1 with artist Jeanette Kuvin Oren, the designer of Shaare Emeth’s new Torah covers, and Dr. Dan Oren, author of the 2018 book, “The Wedding Photo.” RSVP required for certain events at www.sestl.org/scholarinresidence. 

The schedule of events for the Fred and Elsie Deutsch Scholar-in-Residence Weekend includes:  

Friday, Feb. 28

• Shabbat services at 6 p.m.: During Shabbat services, Kuvin Oren will share the meaning behind and the process of creating Shaare Emeth’s Torah covers. 

Saturday, Feb. 29

• “Who Was Buried in Sarah’s Tomb? How a Mesmerizing Marker Taught Torah and Brought a Lost World Back to Life”: Starts with bagels and coffee at 9 a.m., followed by a discussion from 9:30 to 11 a.m. by Dan Oren, who will share the story behind his book, about how a 1993 visit to an abandoned Jewish cemetery in Poland yielded the discovery of a tombstone of an unknown woman named Sarah. Deciphering the moving epitaph and the puzzle hidden within the text leads to unforgettable Torah and meaning. The book will be available for purchase. RSVP Required. 

• An evening with artist and author: Ignite your right or left brain during this event, which starts at 8 p.m. Participants will choose one of two classes and dessert and wine will follow. Cost is free for members and $15 for temple guests. RSVP required. The first class option is “Right Brain: Make Your Own Papercut with artist Kuvin Oren,” where participants will make a special Passover papercut. All supplies will be provided. No experience necessary. The second is “Left Brain: Discover Your Own Genealogical Story with Dan Oren,” offering guidance for participants to start their genealogy journey.

Sunday, March 1

• Genealogy one-on-ones: From 9 a.m. to noon, Dan Oren will offer 20-minute consultations with guests about their genealogy projects. Oren can get a geneology project started or provide suggestions for those who are stuck. Pre-registration is required to reserve a space.
