The iconic Pumpernickles Delicatessen in Creve Coeur is permanently closing.  In a Facebook post published on Monday, just before 2 p.m., deli management announced that the decision to shutter the long-time St. Louis Jewish deli institution was due to current economic conditions.

The deli, located at 11036 Olive Blvd., had a menu of Jewish staples like award-winning pastrami and other fresh meats, and amazing cheeses. They were famous for their half-sour pickles, knishes, braided challahs and of course their matzah ball soup.

According to the deli’s website, Harlan Levin had been the owner of Pumpernickles Deli since April 2012.

The deli fashioned itself a meeting place where family, friends, & business associates could eat, meet and kibitz.
