University City police have arrested and charged a St. Louis County man in connection with vandalism outside the Jewish Student Union (JSU) Staenberg House after a sign was defaced earlier this month. Officials say the incident happened around 11 p.m. on Aug. 6 at the house at 8037 Delmar Blvd.
Surveillance footage shows the suspect, identified as Michael Burleson, altering a sign that originally read “We stand with Israel” to read “We genocide Israel,” according to a police report.
Quick arrest brings relief to JSU leaders
Burleson was charged with one count of harassment motivated by discrimination to frighten or disturb another person and one count of property damage. The speed of the investigation and arrest has brought some reassurance to JSU leaders and families.

“We are grateful to the University City Police Department and its Investigative Division for their swift and professional response following the hateful defacing of the Jewish Student Union sign, which led to the quick arrest of the suspect and ensured justice could be served,” said Scott Biondo, director of community security for the Jewish Federation of St. Louis, praised the quick action by local law enforcement.
“Partnerships between the Jewish Federation and local law enforcement are vital, ensuring prevention, rapid response and coordination in support of everyone’s safety and security.”
Community response and next steps
In a statement sent to the Jewish Light, JSU says it has reassured families and students that safety remains their top priority.
“JSU houses are intended to be safe spaces for teens exploring their identity and connection to the Jewish community, and we are committed to ensuring those spaces remain welcoming and secure.”
