Memorial concert to benefit B’nai Amoona Social Action Committee

The 9th Annual Dr. Herman T. Blumenthal Memorial Concert will take place at 2 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 20 at Congregation B’nai Amoona, 324 S. Mason Road. The concert will include vocal solos, piano solos and music from the men’s chorus. Admission is free, but a donation of $18 to the temple’s Social Action Committee is suggested.
Dr. H.T. Blumenthal (1913-2006) was a pathologist with interests in public health and diseases of aging. A resident of St. Louis in the 1930s and 40s and from 1947 until his death, he was remembered at his funeral as a research scientist, family man and social activist. Drawing on instructions in funeral prayers to perform acts of charity in memory of the deceased, his son Fred began the Annual Dr. Herman T. Blumenthal Memorial Concerts a year later to raise money for social justice efforts.
The Social Action Committee at B’nai Amoona is dedicated to “tikun olam” or healing the world. It supports projects that feed the hungry, recycle materials and support those in need.
Fred Blumenthal is a native of St. Louis. He was choir director at Brith Sholom Knesseth Israel for 17 years. He has been a vice-president of the Guild of Temple Musicians and is vice president and past president of the St. Louis Circle of Jewish Music.
