In honor of National Friendship Day on Sunday, Aug. 4, the Jewish Light caught up with Anita Korman, 95, Hannah Tannenbaum, 91, Renee Dopkin, 85, and Louise Katz, 83, who all reside at Brookdale Senior Living in Creve Coeur and pal around together. They often eat meals with one another, play blackjack, sit outside and kibbitz and occasionally go shopping. At least Renee and Louise like to shop, Hannah and Anita not as much.
All four of these Jewish women are widows. They’re proud of the children they raised and speak lovingly of their grandchildren and in Anita’s case, eight great grandchildren. They hadn’t necessarily envisioned winding up in a senior living facility, but they aren’t kvetching (OK, maybe just a smidge). They have become friends, and their social activities keep them engaged.
“My mother used to say,” says Anita, “that a stone should be alone. A person needs people.”
