In response to escalating tensions and incidents of antisemitism on American campuses, particularly exemplified by recent protests at colleges like Columbia and Washington University, a multifaceted initiative has emerged to offer support and options to Jewish students facing hostility and intimidation.
The Israeli Diaspora Affairs Ministry has issued the call to Israeli universities to absorb as many Jewish-American college students as possible, with the assistance of a data-driven program developed by Inbal Ratz-Gilmore and professor Yuval Sinai of the Kohelet Policy Forum, a Jerusalem-based think tank that promotes free-market policies.
“When we developed this program, it was to help Jewish-American students strengthen the connection to Israel and to overcome bureaucracy. Now that American students are under siege, this is the right policy at the right time to give Jewish students a safe space,” said Ratz-Gilmore.
Meanwhile, a new Israeli relocation company, Belong, is offering free concierge support services to 500 Jewish students from campuses nationwide embattled by anti-Israel protests to help them study in Israel instead.
“We are witnessing an extremely strong antisemitic and anti-Israel wave, expressed in a frightening way across U.S .academic institutions. Jewish students need to know they have top-tier academic alternatives in Israel and we will help those who wish to transfer,” said Gilad Ramot, the founder and chairman of Belong.
Belong is offering two months worth of free services, including help completing program registration documentation; identifying and registering for programs; providing advice on different course tracks and potential credits; connecting US students with Israeli students and student organizations for guidance and networking; finding housing; giving guidance on securing student or residence visas.
Students must apply before May 31 through Belong’s website.
