The numbers are in, and this year’s J Used Book Sale wasn’t just a success—it was a record-breaker. Surpassing its fundraising goal by over 10%, the sale has solidified its role as a cornerstone of the Jewish Book Festival’s (JBF) year-round literary programming.
Jessica Fischoff, director of literary arts at the J, was quick to credit the dedicated volunteers who made it all possible.
“These fundraisers are essential to the continuation of the JBF and our literary arts programming, and we couldn’t do it without our volunteers,” Fischoff said. “This sale is a massive undertaking, and our team really stepped up.”
How the numbers stacked up
The goal for this year’s sale was ambitious—already set 20% higher than last January’s event—but book lovers and bargain hunters alike showed up in force to push totals even higher. Shoppers browsed thousands of books across every genre, with volunteers working year-round to collect, sort, and organize donations for the sale.
Leading the charge were longtime volunteers Karol Elias, Mary Chapman and Linda Mantle, whose leadership helped create one of the most successful sales to date.
“Whether it was sorting books throughout the year, running registers, or helping shoppers find their next great read, every volunteer played a crucial role,” Fischoff said.
More than a sale—it’s a tradition
Beyond the dollars raised, the J’s Used Book Sale is about more than just selling books—it’s about community. Many shoppers come back year after year, eager to hunt for hidden gems while supporting a cause that helps sustain literary programming at the J.
As plans begin for the next sale, one thing is clear: St. Louis book lovers aren’t just keeping this tradition alive—they’re making it stronger than ever.
