J renames Center of Jewish Life to honor Ruth and Harold Sher

The Jewish Community Center has renamed its Center of Jewish Life in honor of Ruth and Harold Sher, recognizing a “generous multi-year contribution by the Shers to continue Jewish mission programming at the J,” according to a news release.

The Ruth & Harold Sher Center of Jewish Life provides programming for all ages, including Family Center events and classes, Jewish Holiday Celebrations, the Jewish Arts and Soul Project, the Songleader Boot Camp and Israel engagement.

“We are so excited that the Shers have chosen to support the core Jewish programming engines at the J,” said Rabbi Brad Horwitz, Director of Jewish Engagement and Adult Programs at the J. “We just couldn’t do what we do without their support.”

Lynn Wittels, President and CEO of the J, noted the Shers have been longtime J supporters. “Herky’s J Café exists thanks to them,” she said. “We are very grateful for their commitment to our community.”

In fact, Harold Sher is the namesake of the J Café — “Herky” is his nickname. He joined the Young Men’s Hebrew Association, the forerunner to the JCC, in the 1940s.

“It is our pleasure to provide this gift to keep the Center of Jewish Life strong at the J,” He said. “We hope to inspire others to lend financial support to ensure high quality Jewish programming for years to come.”
