The sixth episode of Danny Jacobs’ “How To Destroy Everything” was released on Tuesday, Oct. 29. The Jewish Light profiled Jacobs and his filmmaking partner Darren Grodsky in August 2023 after the Jewish St. Louis natives debuted their podcast. The anthology examines the Jacobs home when Danny was growing up.
The house was a bit quirky. Danny’s late father Richard installed secret compartments inside walls and behind a fish tank. The elder Jacobs also made sure the address of the house stood out. He insisted that the home on Royal Manor Drive in Creve Coeur not have a numerical listing but rather be officially deemed “The Royal Manor” by the St. Louis County Assessor of Deeds.
He succeeded, and as a result, the Jacobs’ mailbox was often empty. It also created a challenge for a young Danny Jacobs when he tried to have a pizza delivered from Imo’s. When he provided his address, the Imo’s worker assumed it was a prank.
Jacobs and Grodsky offer a peek inside the Jacobs home and Richard Jacobs’ sometimes erratic behavior. He was a brilliant attorney and a loving father, but Danny said his father often had difficulty showing that love in a healthy way. As a veteran writer and actor, Danny Jacobs can tell a compelling tale, which he does believably, since he’s playing the role of his younger self.
“How To Destroy Everything” doesn’t shy away from describing Richard Jacobs as a tormented soul, but Jacobs and Grodsky are careful to treat him as human with flaws. They also address the subject of mental illness with sensitivity.
After the first two episodes were released in September 2023, Jacobs and Grodsky took a brief hiatus. The podcast started up again two months ago, and four new episodes are now available. The latest episode delves into fallout from Jacobs’ decision to publicly discuss his family history. In total, the “How To Destroy Everything” series has had more than 1 million streams.
