Chabad course explores origins, evolution of Jewish tradition

Beginning May 5, Chabad’s Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) will present “Judaism Decoded: The Origins and Evolution of Jewish Tradition,” a new six-week course that will uncover the unique formula that has sustained Jewish tradition for millennia.
Rabbi Yosef Landa of Chabad of Greater St. Louis will present the course at the Jewish Community Center’s Arts and Education Building, 2 Millstone Campus Drive, on six consecutive Tuesday evenings from 7 to 8:30 pm. The course is offered by Chabad in partnership with the JCC.
With the world changing at a rapid pace, “Judaism Decoded” tackles the intricate questions of how Jewish tradition reacts to new circumstances and modern-day dilemmas. The course is “an extraordinarily sophisticated examination of Talmudic methodology, tackling the toughest questions about the nature and legitimacy of rabbinic law,” says Dr.Eugene Kontorovich, a law professor at Northwestern University and contributor to the Volokh Conspiracy law blog. The course, he says, combines “high academic rigor with fundamental rooting in Jewish tradition.”
JLI programs are designed to appeal to people at all levels of Jewish knowledge, including those without any prior experience or background in Jewish learning. Attendees need not be affiliated with a synagogue or Jewish institution.
