It appears that St. Louis will once again be home to a kosher deli, just 17 days after its last deli, Kohn’s Kosher Meat and Deli closed its doors after more than 60 years in business. In a statement released Thursday evening, The Vaad Hoeir of St. Louis has announced the upcoming soft launch of a new business, Nate’s Kosher Deli, which will initially operate from the Kohn’s Kosher Deli facility pending the finalization of a permanent venue.
No opening date was mentioned for the new establishment.
According to Vaad Hoeir’s statement, which was circulated on social media, Nate’s Kosher Deli, under the ownership of Avi Rosenberg, former Director of Operations at the Simply Sushi kosher franchise, promises a variety of services including butchery, dine-in and take-out delicatessen as well as take-out catering options. Rosenberg, bringing years of food service management expertise, is relocating to St. Louis with his family to oversee the deli’s operations.
This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
Kohn’s Deli closes its doors
On July 16, the Jewish Light reported the sad news that Kohn’s Kosher Meat and Deli in St. Louis, a long-standing establishment since 1963, was closing.
The deli’s shutdown follows its purchase by two East Coast Orthodox businessmen from the Kohn family in November 2022.
Despite efforts to continue the legacy, financial and legal challenges have surfaced, including a lawsuit by Mid Town Distribution claiming nearly $150,000 in unpaid bills. The Vaad Hoeir of St. Louis, responsible for kosher certification, acknowledged the community’s need for such services and expressed hope for a resolution, possibly involving a new operator for the deli.
