Megan Grazman hopes to become a veterinarian one day. So it was only natural that she volunteer at Dirk’s Fund, a Golden Retriever rescue, for her mitzvah project.
Daughter of Debbie and Brent Grazman of Chesterfield, Megan worked there for about five months. “I enjoyed going to help these dogs and it was a personally rewarding experience,” said Megan. “The time I spent at Dirk’s Fund showed me how to work around a lot of dogs, and the kind of devotion and dedication it takes to care of them. I enjoyed learning these things and what it takes to take proper care for a lot of dogs,” she added.
Megan became especially partial to Glassie, a happy-go-lucky Golden Retriever that came to the rescue shelter with a heart condition. Glassie is being monitored and if surgery is needed, costs could run close to $15,000. “This is the level of care this rescue organization gives these dogs,” said Megan’s mother.
Dirk’s Fund is an all-volunteer operation strictly supported by donors’ contributions. Although already a volunteer, Megan also wanted to support the organization monetarily. A student at Parkway Central Middle School, she held a bake sale at UH one Sunday morning before school started. She sold homemade cookies for both dogs and people and raised over $400.
This shelter is a no-kill organization devoted to the rescue, rehabilitation and successful placement of homeless dogs of all ages. Through the care of their dedicated volunteers and the generous donations of their supporters in the community, they are able to provide all the necessary treatments and training to each and every dog that enters their rescue. The combination of all of these factors allows them to provide happy endings and “forever” homes to hundreds of dogs each year.
