Last summer, Jacob Collins volunteered at the Jewish Community Center’s Athletes in Action Camp in Chesterfield. Son of Allison and Jim Collins of Ellisville, Jacob especially enjoyed helping the younger kids with basketball.
The camp had a goal, which Jacob wanted to meet. Camp director, Chris Horan, challenged the kids to bring in 500 cans of food in one week. If the campers reached the goal, Horan promised to shave his head. “With this in mind, there was only one thing to do,” said Jacob, a student at La Salle Springs Middle School.
Using their own savings, Jacob and his friend, Stephen Yoffie, brought in 550 cans. They wanted to make sure the campers won the challenge. Needless to say, they were all thrilled.
Jacob said that Horan kept his promise to the kids and shaved his head. The kids were happy, the camp reached its goal and the Jewish Food Pantry received the cans it needed.
