Mitzvot from the heart: Ethan Slutzky

Ethan Slutzky attended the Good Shepherd School for Children from the time he was two months old until age five, when he left for kindergarten. Because of the tremendous support and education he received there, Ethan wanted to “give back” and chose to make his former preschool his mitzvah project.

Son of Elizabeth and Steven Slutzky of Chesterfield, Ethan spent time as a teacher’s assistant helping the kids during free period, snack and reading time. “When I went to the school, I was in a classroom that I had been in when I was younger. I met many new people, and the kids were all very nice,” he said.

Using his own design and money to buy the materials, Ethan made a step stool for one of the smaller girls to help her access a classroom sink. “She was very nice and looked overjoyed when I gave it to her. I helped her onto the stool to wash her hands at the sink. Then I gave her a hug and said thank you to everyone,” said Ethan.

The Good Shepherd School for Children is dedicated to providing quality inclusive education for children with special needs and typically developing children.

Currently a student at Parkway West Middle School, Ethan, a typical child himself, gained memorable relationships and exposure to children of all backgrounds, talents and capabilities.  This experience has helped him grow into a very respectful and open-minded young man.  He tries to see people for who they are, how he can learn from them, and what each person has to offer.

“I had a lot of fun doing this project. Not only did this bring back good memories but it also created new memories of my old preschool. Seeing the kids I helped and the young girl I built the stool for me brought me a sense of happiness and fulfillment because seeing them smiling helped me find out I was making a difference in their lives,” said Ethan.
