The teachers at Chesterfield Elementary School looked forward to Phillip Underwood’s weekly visits. Son of Jill and Aaron Underwood of Wildwood, Phillip’s mitzvah project involved volunteering his time working with kindergarten and first grade children who were typically slower learners.
A student at Rockwood Valley Middle School, Phillip said he chose this project because he has always enjoyed helping those younger than himself with their academics. “I did a variety of reading, math and writing activities with either small groups or individual children,” he said.
Phillip started this activity about two years ago and continues his volunteering during the school year. “I really enjoy helping out around the community. It feels good to know that you are helping people,” he said.
