The Rosenberg trial remains one of the most controversial espionage cases in American history. Seventy-four years after their sentencing, the “American Jewish Historical Society’s” podcast, “The Wreckage: American Subversives,” is revisiting the infamous case in its latest episode.
Hosted by Rebecca Naomi Jones, the episode explores the 1951 trial that convicted the Julius and Ethel Rosenberg and Morton Sobell under the Espionage Act of 1917. With guest expert Martin J. Siegel, author of “Judgment and Mercy: The Turbulent Life and Times of the Judge Who Condemned the Rosenbergs,” the episode examines the legal and historical implications of the trial, the controversy surrounding Judge Irving Robert Kaufman’s sentencing and how the case continues to spark debate decades later.
Last season, the podcast explored the Venona Project, the counterintelligence operation that flagged the Rosenbergs as Soviet spies. This new episode expands the conversation, offering fresh insights into one of the most polarizing cases of the 20th century.
