The new comedy, “The Materialists,” opened in theaters on June 13. In it, Lucy (Dakota Johnson) is a top matchmaker for elite New Yorkers. At one of her weddings where her ex-boyfriend John (Chris Evans) is a waiter, she meets the very wealthy Harry (Pedro Pascal). She likes both and she soon finds herself in a romantic triangle.
Virtually all the critics said it was an intelligently written romantic comedy but some said it wasn’t funny enough.
JOHN MAGARO, 43, and SAWYER SPIELBERG, 33 (Steven’s son), have supporting roles. ZOE WINTERS (“Succession”) has the film’s largest supporting role. Winters, 40, plays Sophie, a client of matchmaker Lucy. The New Yorker wrote: “Sophie (a terrifically brittle Zoë Winters) endures the indignities of the process in good faith, desperately submitting to one fruitless date after another.”
I had a clue that Winters was Jewish, and a friend checked public records. He found out the Winters’ late father was Catholic and her mother, MERRITT EILEEN TUCKER, is Jewish. Tucker’s father, MORTON P. TUCKER, was living in St. Louis when he died in 1993, though he is buried in a Baltimore Jewish cemetery.
