When “Clueless” hit theaters in 1995, I didn’t expect it to hit me.

I’d grown up on the Brat Pack movies of the 1980s —”The Breakfast Club,” “Pretty in Pink” and “Sixteen Candles.” By the mid-‘90s, I figured I’d aged out of high school movies. But then along came Cher Horowitz, rolling through Beverly Hills in her white Jeep, serving outfits, confidence and an oddly familiar kind of chaos. And to my surprise, I got it. I really got it.
Looking back, I think I know why: somewhere deep down, I knew she was Jewish.
Now, nearly 30 years later, we’re not just getting more Cher—we’re finally getting confirmation of who she’s always been. According to Variety, a new “Clueless” series is coming to Peacock and yes, Alicia Silverstone is stepping back into her iconic role. The show is currently in development. Exact plot details are being kept under wraps, but we do know it will serve as a follow-up to the cult classic film.
The reboot comes just a year after The Jewish Chronicle reported that writer-director Amy Heckerling finally said it out loud: Cher Horowitz is Jewish. Add Silverstone’s recent bat mitzvah throwback on Instagram and it feels like the Jewish teen rom-com universe is finally catching up with what we knew all along. Heckerling will also serve as an executive producer on the new show.
So yes, it’s a reboot. But it’s also a reclamation. The Jewish identity that lived between the lines in 1995 is now front and center. And for everyone who saw themselves in Cher before anyone said it out loud—you weren’t buggin’. You were right.
