As the Jewish Federation of St. Louis races to meet its $9.3 million annual campaign goal, a new challenge has emerged to inspire the community: philanthropist Michael Staenberg has pledged a matching gift of up to $180,000 for all new or increased contributions made before Dec. 31, 2024.
For Staenberg, president of the Jewish Light’s Board of Directors, giving is more than a duty; it’s a way of life.”
“Growing up, my father would say the Torah mandates that we tithe 10 percent, but we are a 20% family,” Staenberg said, reflecting on his upbringing and values. “His guidance has always encouraged me to give more.”
This generous match builds on Staenberg’s earlier contribution to the Federation’s 2024 campaign, reinforcing his commitment to an organization he views as vital to the Jewish community.
“The Federation has navigated immense challenges over the past year,” he said, citing the organization’s response to community needs following the events of Oct. 7, 2023, and its leadership despite operating without a CEO. Supporting the Federation is more important now than ever.”
The Federation’s annual campaign, co-chaired this year by Janie Roodman Weiss and Galia Movitz, funds 85 local organizations and supports Jewish communities in Israel and more than 70 countries worldwide. Staenberg described the Federation as a trusted steward of the community’s resources.
“They are especially well positioned now to manage our donations and invest in our collective future,” he said.
With the Staenberg match in effect through the end of the year, even small contributions can have a big impact.
“Small pebbles and large stones both make ripples in the pond; all contributions are important,” Staenberg emphasized.
For those who haven’t yet donated to the Federation’s annual campaign, or for anyone inspired to give more, this is the moment to act. Donations can be made at http://jfedstl.org/donate.
