Get ready to bake, bond and bring blessings into the world with Loaves of Love, the popular challah baking workshop hosted by Chabad of Chesterfield. On Dec. 11 at 7 p.m., the event will welcome the St. Louis Jewish community for a flavorful experience, featuring a unique cappuccino challah topped with an espresso crumble.
Led by Chana’la Rubenfeld, co-director of Chabad of Chesterfield, the workshop provides a hands-on experience in making challah, the traditional braided bread central to Jewish rituals. Participants will learn techniques for kneading and braiding, as well as the spiritual significance of the mitzvah of baking challah.
Passion for baking
Rubenfeld’s passion for baking began more than 18 years ago, inspired by memories of her mother, Shiffy Landa, filling the house with the scent of freshly baked challah every Friday afternoon.
“To me, food is a way to connect Jewishly,” Rubenfeld said in a past interview. “It makes me so happy to be able to share that with others and encourage them to connect, explore and taste their Jewish heritage as well.”
Now in its 19th year, Loaves of Love has become a treasured tradition for many families. The monthly workshops aim to deepen Jewish connections through shared culinary experiences. Each session features a different flavor and an opportunity to learn a new braiding style, creating lasting memories while celebrating Jewish heritage.
Participants will bake two loaves during the workshop: one to enjoy with their families and another to gift to someone in need of support. The act of giving reflects the program’s mission of spreading warmth and kindness within the community. Nominations for challah recipients are welcome at [email protected].
The event will also include a coffee and pastry dessert bar, perfect for mingling and enjoying sweet treats. Early bird registration is $36 until Nov. 25, and $45 afterward. Members of the Jewish Women’s Circle can attend for free, and sponsorship opportunities are available for $180.
