Starting July 1, the St. Louis Kaplan Feldman Holocaust Museum will begin a new, free art workshop entitled, “600 Butterflies: A Community Tribute to Holocaust Victims.” Butterflies have long been a symbol of the children murdered during the Holocaust. Workshop participants will create handmade paper butterflies, which will be combined to create an art installation to be displayed at the Museum.
“This community project allows participants to engage in a meaningful and creative way, contributing to an art installation that will help keep the memories of victims of the Holocaust alive,” said Helen Turner, director of education at the Museum. “We look forward to engaging with members of the community – of all ages – to create this collaborative display.”
Other Holocaust museums have done similar projects, including the Holocaust Museum Houston, which launched its Butterfly Project is 1996 as a class project under the direction of then-teacher and later former Holocaust Museum Houston Executive Director Susan Myers.
These workshops at the St. Louis Holocaust Museum will take place from 11 a.m. to noon each Monday between July 1 and Aug. 26.
The workshops are free, but pre-registration is requested. More details here.
